So there is such a thing as artisanal pencil sharpening. John Hodgman has blurbed his book “You may think that sharpening a pencil is easy, but David Rees makes it look hard, and that makes all the difference.”

It might seem goofy (the first question on his about page IS “Is This A Joke?”) but then you look at the man and his graphite hair and his valise of assorted sharpening tools, from toothpick to hand cranks to box cutter, and then it makes sense. Perhaps.

A few weeks ago my dad told me to be very careful using my phone in public. On the news someone in SF got punched in the face on MUNI and had his iPhone stolen. I looked up local news sites and figured that since I couldn’t find a related article, it wasn’t worth worrying about. He used to warn me about crossing the street when I was young. I couldn’t walk to school unescorted until I was maybe 15. I think there was a story in the news then too.

Well, now, maybe there is some reason for concern. SF has seen 40+ cell phone muggings in November.

Aaron Rodgers is on track to the best season an NFL quarterback has ever had. I don’t think hearing about him constantly will ever grow tiring for some fans. It makes me a little nostalgic. He played QB for the best college in the world, of course. But on the radio back home I heard the announcer talk about the spiral of his throws. He said it was the most perfect spiral he has ever seen on a football thrown by anybody. I thought it was a little of an overstatement. And when I got home and checked the Reddit gameday thread, I found this great facetious quote:

This guy, look at him call a timeout, his hands are perfectly perpendicular! Just incredible!

No one else will be getting this kind of attention for the rest of the season. Aaron Rodgers is just incredible.

Arkham City Review:

Batman breaks legs, snaps arms, head-butts, throws elbows, and generally just kicks people’s asses. So it is a little strange that the game, staying true to Batman’s comic book ideation, makes so much of its hero’s refusal to take human life. Batman, punching someone in the spine as hard as you are capable of punching someone does not strike me as the modus operandi of a man with any particular interest in preserving human life.

I’d buy a ps3 or a new computer to play Arkham City.
